Two reports landed within hours of each other, and neither has a confirmation attached. Polygon says Disney is looking at Bungie or EA DICE to build Star Wars Battlefront 3, with the renewed popularity of 2017's Battlefront 2 as the apparent trigger. Kotaku's take names DICE as the other rumored contender for the sequel Lucasfilm is shopping around.

Start with the obvious: nobody at Disney, Lucasfilm, Bungie or EA has said a word. This is a rumor with two outlets behind it and zero press releases, so treat the developer shortlist as a shortlist, not a hiring decision.

The DICE option writes itself. DICE made Battlefront 1 and Battlefront 2, the studio knows the Frostbite pipeline, and the 2017 game's long, ugly, genuinely impressive redemption arc is the whole reason this conversation exists. Loot boxes nearly killed it; years of free content and a dedicated player base dragged it back. That's a sequel pitch and a cautionary tale in one package.

The Bungie option is stranger and more interesting. Bungie spent two decades building shooters with weight — Halo's floaty physics, Destiny's gun feel — and a Battlefront game would be the first time that craft gets pointed at blasters, TIE fighters and a license that demands scale. On paper, it's a match. In practice, Bungie has a full plate and a history of biting off more than a release window can hold.

That's the tension Kotaku's headline nails: a Bungie Battlefront would probably rule, and probably also be a waste of a studio that could be doing its own thing.

Why it matters: Battlefront 2's player counts are still doing numbers eight years on, which means the audience never actually left. Whoever gets the keys inherits a fanbase that has already been burned once and remembers exactly how.
